Jonah - 'Kevin's Heart' by J. Cole

Hello again!
Jonah here and it's my turn to review another song from the Billboard Hot 100 and for this weeks post I will be going over 'Kevin's Heart' by the legendary J. Cole, who is no stranger to the Hot 100 after the release of his new album 'KOD', which has been labelled as a masterpiece by critics.

'Kevin's Heart' is an open letter to all artists, celebrities and famous people who deal with expectations and responsibilities. J. Cole communicates how everyone is human and it is normal to make mistakes, but what is important is that we learn from these mistakes and grow as a person.

This simple motif enables Cole to communicate his thoughts and position on what it is like to be a well known individual. Through his lyrical style, Cole uses his words like a novelist to do one thing; tell a story. Backed up by a jazzy, almost blues-y, soundtrack, Cole raps to hi-hats and snares while singing the hook with a soulful tone to show the sincerity of his attitude to what it is like living with expectations as a famous person.

Overall, and with complete bias towards J. Cole because he is the G.O.A.T, this song deals with real word problems spoken through a catchy, heart-felt and straight up chill sound with expertly created lyrics. Cole is probably the only person that can pull off creating a great song while telling a proper story, and although it is simple, there is also a complexity to it that really does pay off.

Additionally, the song title 'Kevin's Heart' is an homage to comedian Kevin Hart, who plays the role of the 'famous individual' in the artistic music video created for this song which was also directed by J. Cole. The music video is quite masterful, it takes the themes of the song and dials it up to 11 through some great acting and welcome additions of Kevin Hart's comical acting style.

That is it for me this week, hope it was a great introspection into how we are all human for you as much as it was for me!

Remember to take one thing from this song; nobody is perfect man!

See ya next week.
